About Moorebank Precinct
Moorebank is the largest IMEX (Import Export) intermodal precinct in Australia. Located in Sydney’s south-west, it is an open access facility, providing services to all transport operators and customers.
Opened in 2019, the precinct has major inter-connecting road and rail links, including a dedicated freight rail line to Port Botany.
At full capacity, the Moorebank Intermodal Precinct will take 3,000 heavy truck movements off Sydney’s roads, reducing congestion and carbon emissions.

Sustainability is at the core of how the Moorebank Intermodal Precinct is planned, built and operated. As Australia’s largest IMEX intermodal precinct, Moorebank is reshaping freight movement while delivering measurable environmental benefits for Sydney and the national supply chain.
Leading the transition to cleaner freight
By shifting freight from road to rail, Moorebank removes up to 3,000 heavy truck movements from Sydney’s roads each day, reducing congestion, cutting carbon emissions, and improving safety across the network.
At full development, the precinct’s combined IMEX and interstate capacity will move over 1.5 million TEU per year, enabling a more efficient, low‑emissions supply chain.

Building a nature‑positive precinct
Moorebank integrates extensive conservation and restoration efforts across more than 100 hectares of biodiversity land, including:
- Regeneration of degraded areas through 9,500+ native plantings,
- Removal and management of invasive weeds,
- Restoration of fauna corridors and habitat structures that support local wildlife. These works are already improving vegetation health and expanding habitat for native species.

Circular resource use and responsible construction
During site preparation, over 1.2 million tonnes of material were excavated, with approximately 75% reused on site, significantly reducing waste and vehicle movements. This resulted in 32,000 fewer trucks en route to landfill and avoided 1,477 tonnes of CO₂‑e.

Community and education
Moorebank’s sustainability program extends beyond the precinct boundary. Initiatives such as the Eco‑Tour Program engage local schools and community groups, connecting students with hands‑on conservation activities and building awareness of Australia’s evolving freight and environmental landscape.
